THE PROCCESS

Join us as we delve into the process of creating a masterpiece in taxidermy from your harvest.

  • Upon arrival at Forever Africa Taxidermy, your trophies undergo an immediate dip and wash in a disinfectant solution to eliminate any blood residue, rust, bacteria, and ticks, thus preventing hair slippage. A detailed inspection is conducted with the client, HO, or PH to identify any damage that is not attributed to us.
  • The Mounting, Tanning, and Dip & Pack process is an essential step mandated by governmental regulations to sterilize animal parts before an export permit can be granted. This procedure is a prerequisite for all taxidermy projects intended for exportation, with only approved veterinary facilities authorized to carry out Dip & Pack services.
  • The hides undergo a soaking process before being transferred to a pickling solution, which softens them, preparing them for shaving. This step aids in the removal of excess skin tissue and enhances the hides’ elasticity, making them suitable for mounting and tanning.
  • Hides are salted and dried and then placed in storage where they undergo a quarantine. During this quarantine period, the hides are carefully monitored to ensure they are free from all pests or contaminants. Once they pass inspection, they are transported to tanneries where they undergo a meticulous tanning process.
  • Subsequently, the tanned hides are treated with a softening solution to increase flexibility and stretch the hide. Upon reaching a semi-dry state, they are placed in a tanning drum where they are tumbled to achieve smooth, flat skins.
  • Following the tumbling process, a meticulous inspection and cleaning procedure take place. Any perforations resulting from gunshots or improper skinning techniques are carefully patched to ensure the hides meet quality standards.
  • Hides designated for mounting undergo a transition from the pickling solution to the tanning solution and are left to soak for several days. Subsequently, once the manikin is prepared, the skin is meticulously positioned on it, stitched, and carefully adjusted for a lifelike appearance.
  • Following the placement of final details, the mount is allowed to dry over a few weeks, with regular checks to ensure the hide remains fixed during the drying phase. Upon complete drying, the finishing process commences, aiming to revitalize your trophy. This stage involves meticulous attention to detail to capture all final nuances before the mount is complete.
  • The skulls and horns are placed in a water tub to soften all raw meat and fat and then boiled in a solution that kills all bacteria. They are then rinsed skulls are bleached to perfection and horns are placed in formalin to kill all bacteria.
  • Upon completion of the formalin and bleaching procedures, the specimens are then readied for the mounting process. Alternatively, if a European mount is being executed, they are prepared accordingly.
